Is it a car, a plane or maybe a boat? One of the best loved cars of all time has got to be Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
We’re excited to be able to showcase Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – the US National Broadway Tour prop car through January 2016! Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is based upon a vintage racing car that was featured in many forms including the original novel by Ian Fleming, movie and stage productions. The inspiration for Chitty came from early racing cars and the sound that these cars made as they were started which sparked the idea for the name.
This prop car has many interesting details and functioning stage tricks. It has 15 separate circuits which control the car’s own theatrical lighting, both interior and exterior. The tires tilt 45 degrees and rotate and of course she has her wings! This fascinating vehicle is on loan from Mr. Tony Garofalo who has been a life-long collector of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang memorabilia ever since he saw the movie at its premiere showing, Christmas 1968 at Radio City Music Hall. Along with this prop car there will be additional memorabilia items on display including several toy versions of the famous Chitty flying car made by both the Corgi British toys 1968, 1:43 scale model and the beautiful Stevenson Toy company released in 2005 for the Broadway stage theatrical production 1:18 scale model toy car along with photos of Tony Garofalo with Dick Van Dyke and the famous movie Clown Costume to name a few.
